Holliston–

William A. Murphy, 89, a longtime resident of Holliston, died at Metrowest Medical Center in Natick after a short illness. He was the son of the late John and Catherine (Powers) Murphy. He is the husband of June W. Murphy of Holliston

Born in New Bedford, he had graduated from New Bedford High School in 1939 and was an Army Sergeant serving for 5 years during World War II with the Reconnaissance Company, 601st Tank Destroyer Battalion, 26th Quartermaster Co., and 26th Infantry Division. Mr. Murphy enjoyed several careers, working for over 30 years in the U.S. Postal Service, later in haberdashery, and most recently at the Holliston True Value Hardware store. Throughout his life, he was known as a gentleman who was gregarious and friendly to all he knew.

Besides his wife, he leaves two step-children, Maggie Holmes of Manchester, NH, and Robert Racine of Junction City, CA. He was the step-grandfather of the late Michael B. Holmes, as well as Mark R. Holmes, Karen P. Holmes, Kevin C. Holmes, Carrie A. Racine, and Daniel M. Young; and step-great-grandfather of McKenzie C. Holmes, Michaela B. Holmes, Peyton K. Holmes, and Maxwell K. Young. He also leaves many nieces and nephews of the Murphy Family.

Calling hours will be held at Chesmore Funeral Home, 854 Washington St.,(Rt. 16) Holliston, on Saturday, February 24th from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Saint Mary’s Church, Washington St., Holliston at 10 am on Monday, February 26th, followed by a burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery. A reception will be held following the burial in St. Mary’s Church Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mary’s Church. 8 Church St., Holliston, MA 01746
